Learning how to care for me

This study describes an educational experience which was coordinated in collaboration with children’s social services, specifically the Association for Family Guidance and Treatment, ARGABE, which is responsible for implementing the specialist family intervention programmes run by the Guipúzcoa Provincial Council for minors who are victims of family abuse. The experience focused on training parents in communication and conflict resolution skills and teaching them how to improve their relationship with their children. Sessions were held once a fortnight on Saturday mornings. The minors also attended the Saturday training sessions, although in this case, the intervention focused on improving their social-personal skills, mainly through play-based activities. The sessions, which began with all participants (educators, mothers, fathers and children) having breakfast together before the start of the intervention, were used as a springboard for the work then carried out during the week by social workers, who sought to strengthen and reinforce the elements dealt with the previous Saturday.
